Mexico Expat Coaching Services

EXPAT COACHING

Welcome!

Moving to another country is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. The process is difficult and can create internal chaos for even the strongest, most confident people. There is the assumption that if one has successfully relocated to another country, all of their problems disappear.

It is important to understand, relocating does not eliminate any problems you are facing. Maybe you spend too much money, are co-dependent, struggle with some type of addiction, or are trying to run away because you are unhappy in your current situation.

Whatever “baggage” you have is packed up and moved with you to your new destination. Welcome to the double stress of caring for those same struggles AND acclimating to your new home country.

Being an expat can be lonely and isolating at times. Two important key factors are to keep yourself busy, and form a support system. You are choosing to move to a new country because you are seeking something different. Chances are there will be differences you will also find difficult. Embrace new hobbies and find excitement in trying new things.

Dream Stage

Many individuals struggle to move past the stage of dreaming. It is common for individuals to wait until “retirement age” to follow their dreams. Sure it may be the safest time when there is a pension to rely on. At the same time, so much of your life is already gone. What about living while you’re young and healthy?

What about the rest of us? How are we able to move past the dreaming stage? What is standing in your way to creating the life you want now rather than later? I am not ashamed to tell you I spent the last 15 years of my life in the “dream stage.” The reason for this and probably so many other people in the world is the F word.  Yes, you got it… FEAR.

We fear everything.

As humans, we are creatures of habit. We get comfortable with our surroundings. Why make yourself uncomfortable if you can avoid it, right? So it is embedded in us to stay within our safety net, where everything is normal.

This applies to our jobs, relationships and yes even location. It is so much easier to stay with what we know rather than taking risks. Anytime something feels “scary”, avoidance kicks in to remove this uncomfortable feeling.

Studies show the happiest people are ones who learn to live outside of their comfort zone. The ones who take risks!

Most of us make life so much harder than it has to be. Our limited belief in ourselves and false perceptions makes the fear inside us cause havoc.

Change brings up shame and guilt. All growth can leave us feeling helpless. I have definitely been in that seat asking “How, why, what the hell am I doing? I must be crazy!”

When you are willing to re-start imperfectly, this is the first step. I can promise you no matter how much time you spend preparing, it is impossible to predict potential negative outcomes. Success comes from being able to take these moments and roll with them.

There is an art to doing the right thing poorly. Taking the road less traveled can be one of the most challenging AND rewarding things you can ever do for yourself.

Part of the initial process is considering your calculated risks. During our work together, we will review the benefits as well as possible consequences of living in Mexico. I will ask a bunch of questions, some maybe you have thought about and others you may not have. We will look at your employment, financial situation, health, attachments, and a number of other areas. I want you to be as prepared as possible for your transition. I have seen people pick up and leave, only to return to their home country within 6 months due to not having a stable plan in place. It’s so important to have a plan, along with a couple of back-up plans.

An expat coach can help you challenge your perceptions, learn patience, and embrace failures. Working through these obstacles can save you a lot of time, money and heartbreak in the long run.

The Purge

There is a certain high when announcing “Hey, I am outta here.” Mixed opinions of doubt, jealousy or excitement are common within our loved ones. When the doubters voice their opinions, it can leave us questioning our decisions again. “Am I crazy? I am probably going to fail!”

After the high has worn off, reality sets in. There is a lot of work to be done to change your entire life.

Primary concerns about moving.

I could go on… and on…. and on…. I know because these are all the things I had to figure out!

Let’s talk about stuff for a minute.  It makes us feel good to have it. We “might need that someday.” We use things to fulfill emptiness. I was so overwhelmed when the realization hit that I had 20 years of things accumulated. The avoidance kicked back in because it was super uncomfortable.

We are all drowning in “stuff.” Deciding what to put in storage, take with us, throw away, donate, etc. can be so overwhelming. Sometimes people need time to vent because the process of elimination is exhausting and tedious.

Our belongings are our anchors. They represent success, change, and life heartaches. Working on cutting the anchors and identifying what really matters can be revitalizing! Break-ups are hard but let’s be real for a minute, this is a torturous relationship. Dumping some things is necessary in order to move on to the next chapter of our life.

After parting with so many dishes, items of clothing, etc., I had a hard realization.  Life was actually much easier without so much stuff! Decluttering allowed me to have more time because I no longer had to make decisions about where to put things. There are no more daunting moments of trying to stack glasses or shove clothes into a closet. Everything fits so much more neatly now!

It can be overwhelming to figure out how to get the belongings you decided keep to your new location.

During our coaching sessions, I can help you decide what is worth keeping and what you can dump and re-purchase in your new home.

The last 30 days before the move are probably some of the most emotional times on this journey. It becomes crunch time to make sure everything is taken care of. Fear comes up a lot that something will be forgotten.

I noticed people tend to have a huge emotional meltdown around the 30-day mark. Insecurity and self-doubt hits hard. Even for myself after years of clinical training in mental health, I was terrified and almost backed out. If I had not already sold 80% of what I owned, I may have quit then.  I told myself, “It’s a little late now,” and just kept pushing forward.

During the last 30 days, a lot of emotions come up around leaving the house you have had for years, saying goodbye to your loved ones, and that realization you may never be back to your favorite restaurant or sno-cone shop!

Even if you didn’t particularly care for the place you lived, it is still an eerie feeling. I promise you it is so much worse than it sounds!

Dealing with saying goodbye to everything and everyone you have.

It is ideal to purchase this package once you are at 90 days left before the big move.
(9) 50 minute coaching sessions + (1) 80 minute crisis coaching session (for your last minute emotional breakdown)

$1200 (expires 90 days after purchase)

The Acclimation

The moving “high” can last anywhere from one day to several weeks. Then reality sets in.

You find yourself in the seasoning aisle at the grocery store one day and realize you don’t have a clue what you are doing! You find yourself needing batteries and when you try to confidently ask (after looking up how to ask on your Spanish translator), a wave of shame and frustration washes over you when the employee has no idea what you just asked. You think to yourself, Never mind, I don’t need the item that bad.

You leave feeling defeated. On your drive or walk home, you start to realize what a HUGE mistake you made. What the hell were you thinking moving to a foreign country? You remember people saying vacationing and living are very different and you’re realizing just how true that is.

I am here to tell you there are DAILY challenges when you move to Mexico, especially if you do not speak Spanish. Cultural adjustments are present during vacationing but when you live it day in and day out, we tend to eventually become emotionally fatigued.

The big move can also be socially isolating. It is almost like being the “new kid at school.”  It takes time to figure out who is genuine and who is going to cheat off your homework when you aren’t looking.

I have noticed the “three month curse.”  It seems to be the timeframe when the new has worn off, we are so emotionally fatigued, and we start to think about returning to our home country.

The Seasoned Expat

Congratulations, you survived the first year of your transition.

However, a number of things can still go wrong. Perhaps you are getting homesick. You may still struggle with the adaptation process and no one else seems to “get it”.

When living in a foreign country, it is sometimes difficult to find the same quality care we’re used to. After becoming an expat myself, I have grown to understand the unique challenges we face. This encouraged me to expand my work specifically to expats living in Mexico.
